Assignments for 2023

A new year is here and has brought new aspirations along with it. Last year was a period of much growth and change, I hope I can carry them forward this year.

I view this year, not as a linear set of objectives to be attained by the end of the year, but more as a series of alternative avenues to be explored. As such, I might end up achieving all. or some, or none of these goals by the end, but might have found something else interesting instead.

It will be a fun time, and I can’t wait to get started. Here are my broad goals for 2023 (in no particular order) :

Forays into business

I want to start my first business venture in this year. I do not envision anything with a lot of innovation or a lot of time spent in creating the product offering. I will likely buy into an already proven and existing market in one of the more traditional sectors and see what kind of challenges I run into. I am not expecting success, or even hoping for it. But the learnings that will come from this experience will be invaluable. A good deadline to finish this project will be the first half of the year, and the final deadline is the end of the year.

Creative ventures

I want to spend some more time in creative ventures. Three core areas I have identified are music, comedy, and acting. I will engage in music by shooting music covers (occasionally with my friends), with comedy by performing in open mics in clubs, and in acting by appearing for at least one open audition before the end of this year. My obsession with acting is recent, and not very heavily ingrained, but I find it interesting enough to add it to my assignments list. Performing comedy in at least one public setting, or appearing for at least one audition in acting will constitute a success.

Bringing back the bookworm

I’ve decided to maintain more or less a one book/week pace for this year, and have already started executing this since December of last year. My main areas of focus are early childhood education/teaching/parenting, nonfiction self-improvement books, and a mix of fiction books across all categories. Some additional conditions I want to place include these books not being pdfs. The only valid categories would be a physical hard copy or an audiobook. If I invest in a Kindle this year, then Kindle copies would also count. A successful book reading campaign would include 8 monthly book review posts. A big success would be 12 of them.

More work

While I absolutely love my current job, my one big recurring problem has been the lack of enough work. I want to rectify that this year. I see achieving this in one of three ways. 1)Finding more ways to help my current company and convince my boss to add more work to my plate. 2) Find a second job to fill in my remaining hours. 3) Devote my remaining hours to building a business, which ties into one of my other goals. A fourth option would be to trade my current job for another engagement or engagements, but considering how much I like this job that option is highly unlikely. Winning more work to do through one of the three methods would constitute success in this assignment.

These are my broad assignments for this year. I have many more, but they are less important and highly diversified, so I will reserve them for maybe a later date. Writing this down has helped me organize my thoughts, and will give me the necessary accountability needed to give all of these goals all of my effort. I’m curious to know, what are some of the assignments you have given yourself this year? How do you plan on measuring success there? Let me know down below.

I’ll see you soon!
